Our vision in EYFS

At Doddinghurst Infant School, we have a passion for providing children with the best possible start. We create an environment that promotes awe, wonder and curiosity. This develops the children's independence and resilience for learning. The whole school intent permeates across the EYFS setting and it is implemented through a range of effective pedagogical strategies and approaches. The impact of this is that children love coming to school, form effective relationships, are safe and make excellent progress in their learning and meet high levels of attainment. It is an environment where children thrive and our happy,

We offer a holistic approach to learning recognising the needs and interests of the children using real life, meaningful experiences both in the classroom and in the outside area. We build on what the children already know and give them the knowledge and skills for future learning. We promote enjoyment, resilience and independence.

How we teach in EYFS

We follow The Early Years Foundation Stage framework which sets the statutory standards for the development, learning and care of children from birth to age 5. The framework is split into seven areas, 3 prime areas (which are the necessary skills children need to access) and the 4 specific areas.

The prime areas are: Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, social and emotional development.

The specific areas are literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design.

Characteristics of Effective learning run through all areas and look at how a child learns through playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically. We teach the skills and knowledge children need through an enquiry approach utilising both the indoor and outdoor learning environments. Enquiry questions are exciting and engaging, encouraging children to explore and investigate through observation and play, whilst taking regard of the whole child's development; intellectual, emotional, social, physical and aesthetic

.

 What children learn and achieve:

Our EYFS curriculum is built on the principles of play, exploration, communication, and relationships. We create a language-rich, nurturing environment where every child can develop the foundations for learning through meaningful experiences. Teaching is carefully planned to balance child-initiated play with high-quality adult interactions that extend thinking, model language, and build early knowledge and skills across all areas of learning.

We support speech, language and communication needs by delivering a language-rich environments.  Adults model high-quality spoken language throughout the day, narrating play, introducing new vocabulary, and providing clear sentence structures. With targeted vocabulary teaching children are consistently exposed to language through stories, songs, visuals, and repetition. Children access visual timetables, communication boards, and Makaton where appropriate.

We highly value oracy and Early Communication Skills through structured talk opportunities such as Circle times, story retelling, role play, and guided play encourage children to express ideas, ask questions, and build confidence in speaking. Vital espeiences through play engage children and make learning fun and memorable.

Through a nurturing, inclusive, and language-rich approach, we ensure that every child in EYFS is supported to thrive. By adapting teaching to meet diverse speech, language, communication, and social needs—and by grounding learning in both lived experience and the local context—we give all children the strongest possible start to their educational journey
