Our vision for mathematics, here at Doddinghurst Infant School, is to create a nurturing and inspiring environment where every child develops a love for numbers, problem-solving, and logical thinking.  We empower children to see maths as a vital tool for understanding the world around them and as a skill they can approach with enjoyment and resilience.

Intent

Our intent is to provide a rich and engaging curriculum that equips children with the essential skills and understanding to thrive in mathematics. We aim to foster a deep conceptual understanding of key mathematical ideas through practical exploration, play, and problem-solving activities. Our curriculum is designed to ensure progression, inclusivity, and a love of maths, preparing every child for the next stage of their learning journey. Our approach is deeply rooted in our School Values:

Self-belief - We empower children to take ownership of their mathematical journey, fostering resilience, independence, and a proactive attitude toward learning.

Happiness - We encourage Maths to be a joy and postive emotional experience that children feel when engaging in activities. They display a sense of achievement and confidence as they explore numbers and discover patterns .

Independence -  By  cultivating independence, children become resourceful, and adaptable nurturing lifelong learning skills.

Nurture - Children feel secure to share their thoughts through the 'Think, Pair, Strategy' allowing them to feel safe to explore new concepts.

Excellence - We encourage the pursuit of deep understanding, mastery, in mathematical concepts. Children who strive for excellence demonstrate critical thinking, creativity, and perseverance, approaching challenges with determination.

Implementation

Our Maths curriculum is thoughtfully designed to align with the National Curriculum and enriched by the White Rose Maths programme. This approach supports a mastery-based ethos, where all children are given the opportunity to achieve a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts before progressing. Our focus on mastery enables all children to progress at a pace that suits them, with the belief that every child can succeed in Maths given the right support and opportunities.

To cater to the diverse needs of our learners, we adapt resources and teaching strategies, ensuring lessons are inclusive and accessible while providing appropriate challenge for all abilities.

We aim to build a strong foundation in mathematical concepts through hands-on, play-based learning that fosters curiosity and confidence. By tailoring our teaching to meet individual needs and encouraging collaboration,

By starting with hands-on exploration using physical resources (concrete), transitioning to visual representations (pictorial), and finally working with abstract methods and problems, children develop confidence and fluency at each stage. This ensures they not only understand the "how" of Maths but also the "why," supporting their ability to apply learning in a range of contexts.

Mathematics is a universal language with a wealth of cultural inputs throughout the ages and through our themed weeks and days, children have experience of number systems from around the world.

Parents are given the opportunity to learn with their children throughout the year through Maths workshops
