What our children say about maths

EYFS- 'I like adding as the number gets bigger; maths is fun when I use resources to make 10.'

Year 1- 'Maths is fun because we get to do lots of problems. I like using the cubes and talking about how I worked it out.'

Year 2- 'I like maths because I can solve problems and it makes me feel proud when I get the answer.'

Our vision for maths

Our vision for maths is to create a nurturing, inclusive and inspiring environment where every child feels a strong sense of belonging and develops a love for numbers, problem solving and logical thinking. We want every child to feel valued, suppoted and confident as they expolre mathematical ideas. Our aim is to empower children to see maths as a vital tool for understanding the world around them and as a skill they can approach with enjoyment, curiosity and resilience. Through positive relationships and a culture of encouragement, we help children believe that they can succeed in maths.

We provide a rich, engaging and enquiry-based curriculum that equips children with the essential skills and understanding they need to thrive. Our curriculum is designed to ensure progression, inclusivity and a genuine love of maths, preparing every child for the next stage of their learning journey. Our approach is deeply rooted in our School Values, ensuring that all children are encouraged to SHINE as confident, capable and enthusiastic young mathematicians.

How we teach maths

We use real-life experiences from our local community to help children see how maths is useful in their every day world-from spotting numbers around the village to measuring and exploring outdoors. OUr classrooms are calm, welcoming spaces where children feel safe to take risks, make mistakes and try again. We know that children start school with different levels of confidence and early maths experiences, so we adapt our teaching to remove barriers and make learning accessible for everyone.

We follow the National Curriculum, supported by the White Rose programme, which helps us build a clear and well-sequenced journey for all learners. Our mastery approach gives children the time they need to develop a deep understanding, with the belief that they can all succeed.

Lessons include a balance of modelling, guided practice and jhands on exploration. We adapt our teaching to ensure maths is inclusive, accessible and approriately challenging for every child. We use the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach so children move from practical resources to pictures to written methods, building strong understanding at each stage. We also encourage children to learn though enquiry, asking questions, investigating ideas and talking about their thinking. Collaboration and discussion help children develop confidence, independence and an enjoyment of maths.

Throughout the year we celebrate maths as a universal language with rich cultural roots. Through cross curricula links children explore number systems and mathematical ideas from around the world, helping them to see maths as somehting creative, diverse and meaningful.

What children learn and achieve

Maths at our school helps children grow into confident, curious and resilient leanrers. Because our classrooms are calm, nurturing and inclusive children feel safe to have a go, make mistakes and keep trying. The children begin to think of themselves as mathematicians who can think, reason and solve problems. Through our mastery approach the children build a deep and secure understanding of key ideas and develop strong foundations that help them apply their leanring in every day situations.

Children can talk about their thinking, work woth others and approach challenges with confidence. They enjoy real-life maths experiences and the enquiry based activities.

By the time they leave our infant school children have a solid grasp of essential mathematical skills, a positive attitude towards the dubject and the confidence to continue their maths journey in Key stage 2 and beyond.

Enrichment

We enrich maths through meaningful, everyday experiences. CHildren explore maths outdoors, use real objects to investigate ideas, enjoy maths through stories, puzzles and games, and take part in practical challenges that spark curiosity. Through continuous provision there are rich opportunities for counting, sorting, measuring and pattern-making through play. Children work together, talk about their thinking and learn through enquiry. These small but powerful experiences makes maths enjoyable, relevant and accessible for every child, supporting a strong foundation for future learning.

Maths Subject Lead

As Maths Subject Leader, I bring my own lifelong love of Maths into everything I do. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge, competitiveness, creativity and satisfaction that Maths offers, and I’m passionate about sharing that feeling with the children. I love finding fun, practical and engaging ways to teach Maths so that every child feels included, supported and excited to learn. Seeing children grow in confidence, enjoy problem‑solving and realise “I can do this!” is at the heart of how I lead Maths across our school.

How families can help at home

Maths is everywhere in the real world.

Encourage them to:

• Read the numbers around them, for example; car number plates and road signs

• Play games using cards or dice rolling games such as snakes and ladders.

• Find opportunities to count aloud or sing counting songs.

• Find totals from prices in shops and work out the change.

• Weigh & measure ingredients in the kitchen.

• Tell the time on both digital and analogue clocks & watches.
