At Doddinghurst Infant School our vision for RSHE (Relationships, Sex, and Health Education) and PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education) is to empower our children with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to navigate the world with confidence and compassion. Through the Jigsaw programme, we deliver a comprehensive and progressive curriculum that supports pupils' personal development, mental well-being, and understanding of relationships, ensuring they are well-prepared for life beyond the classroom. Our approach is deeply rooted in our school values:

  • Self-belief â€“ We encourage every child to develop self-confidence and a positive self-image through the ‘Celebrating Difference’ and ‘Healthy Me’ Jigsaw themes.
  • Happiness – The ‘Being Me in My World’ and ‘Relationships’ themes help children build emotional well-being and foster positive connections with others.
  • Independence – Through the ‘Dreams and Goals’ unit, children learn to set personal targets, make informed choices, and take responsibility for their actions.
  • Nurture – The Jigsaw approach supports emotional literacy and mindfulness, ensuring all children feel valued and supported within our school community.
  • Excellence – We strive for excellence by equipping pupils with the skills and resilience to thrive socially and emotionally, underpinned by the statutory RSHE curriculum expectations.

Our curriculum aligns with the statutory RSHE requirements set out by the Department for Education, covering key aspects such as relationships, health, and well-being in an age-appropriate and engaging way. Through this holistic approach, we aim to nurture well-rounded, confident, and respectful individuals who contribute positively to society.

Implementation

We implement our RSHE and PSHE curriculum using the Jigsaw programme, which provides a progressive, spiral approach that ensures consistency and depth of learning across our infant school. Our teaching is inclusive to all children, adapting lessons to meet the diverse needs of our pupils, including those with SEND and EAL, ensuring everyone can access and engage with the curriculum meaningfully. We take a mastery approach, allowing children to explore concepts in depth through enquiry-based learning that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and reflection. While we follow the Jigsaw programme to provide a structured and comprehensive curriculum, we also remain responsive to the needs of our children, using circle times and class discussions to address emerging issues and support emotional well-being as they arise. Enrichment opportunities, such as themed PSHE days, visiting speakers, and community projects, enhance our curriculum by providing real-life contexts and experiences. We celebrate children's achievements in PSHE and RSHE through our reward systems, assemblies, and displays, recognising their growth in personal and social development and reinforcing positive attitudes and behaviors across the school.
