Our vision for RSHE/PSHE
At our school our vision for RSHE/PSHE is simple: we want every child to feel that they truly belong. Our RSHE/PSHE curriculum is built around our SHINE values — Self‑belief, Happiness, Independence, Nurture and Excellence — and these values guide everything we do. We believe that children learn best when they feel safe, valued and understood, and when they are encouraged to explore big ideas through gentle enquiry. Through RSHE/PSHE, we help children understand themselves, build positive relationships and develop the confidence to make thoughtful, healthy choices. Our aim is for every child to feel proud of who they are and to know that they have a special place in our school community. We celebrate individuality, remove barriers, and make sure every child feels seen, valued and supported.
How we teach RSHE/PSHE
Our teaching is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and statutory RSHE guidance. We implement our RSHE and PSHE curriculum using the Jigsaw programme, which provides a progressive, spiral, calm and nurturing approach that ensures consistency and depth of learning across our infant school. Our teaching is inclusive to all children, adapting lessons to meet the diverse needs of our pupils, including those with SEND and EAL, ensuring everyone can access and engage with the curriculum meaningfully. We take a mastery approach, allowing children to explore concepts in depth through enquiry-based learning that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and reflection. While we follow the Jigsaw programme to provide a structured and comprehensive curriculum, we also remain responsive to the needs of our children, we use stories, circle time, discussion, role‑play and mindfulness to help children explore real‑life situations in an age‑appropriate way to address emerging issues and support emotional well-being as they arise. Enrichment opportunities, such as themed PSHE days, visiting speakers, and community projects, enhance our curriculum by providing real-life contexts and experiences. We celebrate children's achievements in PSHE and RSHE through our reward systems, assemblies, and displays, recognising their growth in personal and social development and reinforcing positive attitudes and behaviors across the school.
What children learn and achieve
Through RSHE/PSHE, children learn how to recognise and manage their emotions, build healthy friendships, celebrate differences and keep themselves safe. They begin to understand the importance of kindness, respect and responsibility — both in school and in the wider world. Children also develop important life skills such as problem‑solving, decision‑making and understanding how their actions affect others. Because our approach is nurturing and inclusive every child feels able to take part and succeed. By the time they leave our infant school, we want every child to feel confident in expressing themselves, proud of their identity and ready to SHINE in everything they do.
Enrichment
Our RSHE/PSHE curriculum is enriched through assemblies, themed weeks, community events and opportunities for children to take on roles of responsibility. We celebrate diversity, promote inclusion and create experiences that help children understand the world around them. From kindness challenges to wellbeing activities, from charity events to pupil‑led projects, we give children meaningful opportunities to practise the skills they learn in RSHE/PSHE. These experiences help them grow into thoughtful, caring and confident young people who feel connected to their school and community.

Mrs Emma Fagg
RSHE/PSHE Subject Lead
Hello, I’m the RSHE Lead, and I feel incredibly privileged to guide this important part of our curriculum. We celebrate individuality, remove barriers, and make sure every child feels safe, valued and able to SHINE, and RSHE plays a huge role in making that happen. I love leading this subject because it allows me to nurture children’s confidence, support their wellbeing and help them build the skills they need to form positive relationships and understand the world around them. Through our enquiry‑based approach and the Jigsaw programme, I get to see children grow in self‑belief, independence and happiness every day — and that’s what makes this role so special.
